HD problems
Right i need a bit of help,
I have just got 2 new seagate 60 gig baracuda v1 7200rpm hard drives they r working ok i think but they just dont seem to be very fast infact they seem slower then the 1 i took out
(80gig 5400rpm seagate)
Also when i boot up the screen says detecting hard drives then it finds them and then another screen that shows you more in fo as its booting up it tells you that 1 is on primary master ata 100 and the other is on secondery slave ata 33.
I have new ide cables as well and the pc is only 3 months old.
The primery ide one has my cd rom and hard drive on and secondery 1 has re-writer and other hard drive on. The first one has the jumper on master and the other 1 is set to slave.
Now have i got them set up right?? or is they a way that i should have them set up??
Please HELP!!!!
PC SPEC:
P4 2Ghz
768meg DDR 2100
ge-force 4 460
2x60gig baracoda 7200rpm
SB audigy
sony cd rom drive
sony 24 cd re-writer
XP Pro

You have to specify some options in the bios mate.
Have you done that?

well, depending on your bios just make sure you find an option for ATA and set it to 100/133 depends on your drive.
Is usually 100 ATA.

There are 2 types of IDE cables.... the new ones have 80 pins (I think.) The old ones won't support faster than 66, so you need the new ones. They have the same connection on the end but you can see a difference in the cable type.

i installed a 60gig hd a while back and was having the same problem with it running slow. after checking all my settings i realised i haden't enabled dma in windows. once i did this then the hard drive was wizzing along fine. may not be your problem but worth a look anyway.

Thanks guys all ok now,
Got them both flying along on ata 100 (udma 5)
(very fast 100meg a second transfer rate)
i had to get a utility from seagate cos when they ship them out they r all set to ata 33 which will work on all computers..
So you D/L this program from there site then make a ms-dos disk then put the program on the disk and it gives you the option of changing the speed of the drive
(to what ever your M/board supports).......

That's pretty dumb... you'd think they would set it at the optimal setting by default.
